Otero-Sabogal is a bicultural psychologist and an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Health & Aging, Department of Behavioral Sciences. She has worked on health promotion, disease prevention and health care quality improvement in multi-ethnic communities for more than 22 years. Her research focus includes developing, implementing and evaluating interventions in chronic disease, smoking, STD and cancer screening for low-income multiethnic populations; developing culturally and literacy tailored health messages; identifying predictors of cancer screening within the managed care environment and community-based clinics; applying psychological theory in research to understand health behaviors among ethnic minorities and health communication among physician and low-income patients. She has incorporated these approaches into community interventions with underserved communities. Her current work focuses on health care quality improvement to provide quality of health care, including language and cultural appropriate services to vulnerable populations. Her studies on community hospitals and community clinics have re-designed health care system primary care practices to improve access and cultural competence to address physicians, providers and monolingual patient barriers to health care. Her overall areas of interests include cultural competence, cancer control interventions in vulnerable populations, cardiovascular disease prevention, health disparities, health care systems re-design, health communication including provider-patient communication, tailoring and targeting educational messages and educational materials to low literacy patients. She collaborates with state, local, and international research and health care service oriented groups.
