Dr. Jeff Newman is Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Health & Aging. He received his M.D. at Tufts University, and his M.P.H. (Epidemiology) at the University of California, Berkeley.

Since 2003, he has been Director of the Sutter Health Institute for Research & Education, studying clinical information systems and their alignment with medical and nursing workflows. Before that, he was a Mid-Career Fellow in Health Policy at UCSF and Project Director of the California Acute Stroke Prototype Registry.

From 1995 to 2002, Dr Newman was Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs at CMRI (now called Lumetra), the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for California. He has had a number of leadership roles with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and public health & managed care organizations in California.

Dr Newman previously worked at the Centers for Disease Control and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He has authored a variety of publications on  chronic disease epidemiology, quality improvement, and clinical decision support.

Recent Projects

Title:  California Acute Stroke Prototype Registry
Project Period:  9/02 - ongoing (Dr. Newman was Project Director.  Clay Johnston MD PhD is PI)
Funding Agency:  Centers for Disease Control
Description:  Clinical information is collected prospectively in 10 California hospitals to assess acute treatment of strokes, and prevention of recurrence. Opportunities to improve stroke care and documentation of services are identified, and the costs and benefits of prospective versus retrospective data collection are assessed.

Title:  Evaluation of the Use of Computerized Medical Records by Small Medical Practice
Project Period: 2-12/2002  (Dr. Newman was Associate Investigator. Robert Miller PhD is PI)
Funding Agency:  California HealthCare Foundation
Description:  A qualitative study that describes the costs and benefits of electronic medical records (EMR's) in small physician practices, as well as factors that influence these costs and benefits.

Title:  Evaluation of the Santa Barbara Community Data Exchange California HealthCare Foundation
Project Period: 1-12/2002 (Dr. Newman was Associate Investigator.  Robert Miller PhD is PI)
Funding Agency:  California HealthCare Foundation
Description:  An assessment of the effect of the Santa Barbara Care Data Exchange (CDE) on physician productivity and perceived quality of patient care and quality of service.
