Research and Activities

Dr. Robert Newcomer received his B.A. degree (Political Science) from the University of California, and masters and doctorate degrees (Planning & Urban Studies) at the University of Southern California. He is a Professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, and Associate Director of the Center for Personal Assistance Services.

He was formerly chair of the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences, and formerly Deputy Director of the Institute for Health & Aging. He worked in hospital and long term care planning, and county government before joining UCSF as a faculty member in 1976.

His research interests focus on community long term care service systems planning and evaluation.

Current work includes studies of health and community service expenditures among long term care recipients, and occupational injury among personal care workers. He has also done extensive work in care coordination and managed care.

He is a fellow in the Association of Health Services Research, and the Gerontological Society of America; and has served on the Governing Council of the American Public Health Association, and as section chair and as a member of the Council of the Gerontological Society.

He is a recipient of the Schluderberg Award from the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Helen Nahm Award from the UCSF School of Nursing.

He has served as a member and vice chair of the Committee on Academic Personnel, member and chair of the Committee on Faculty Welfare, member of the Committee on Research, and the Committee on Committees.

He has also served as chair of the Faculty Council in the School of Nursing, and as the UCSF representative to two UC-systemwide senate committees: Academic Personnel, and Faculty Welfare.
