Dr. Fox is Co-Director at the Institute for Health & Aging and Professor of Sociology and Health Policy in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He received his Master of Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of California, San Francisco where he was also a Pew Health Policy Scholar.
Dr. Fox's interests include the sociology of aging, long-term care, evaluation of social and health interventions, health policy, disease-based social movements, economic costs of illness, and health promotion.
He has written numerous reports and articles on the delivery of community-based long-term care and mental health services to the elderly, evaluation of community-based health promotion interventions for the elderly, Alzheimer's disease, the economic costs of disease, and clinical quality improvement.

Title: Best Practices in Childhood Asthma
Project Period: 7/1/05-6/30/08

Description: The goal of this project is to create, lead, and
sustain a community-based interventional program in childhood asthma
prevention and practice management for economically-vulnerable and
underserved disparate populations in California based on use of
continuous quality improvement methodologies and a multidisciplinary
team at the clinic level to include a clinician leader and an asthma
coordinator.
Title: Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Project (BCCCP)
Project Period: 10/1/01-6/30/09

Description: The purpose of this project is to maintain a
computerized system to track women screened annually through the Breast
and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP). This screening program
aims to provide detection of cancer as early as possible, increase
access to services, make available affordable treatment, and reduce
cancer mortality in the targeted populations throughout California.
Title: California Arthritis Partnership Project (CAPP)

Services
Description: The
purpose of this project is to promote awareness of arthritis as a major
cause of disability and to empower persons with risk factors for
arthritis, as well as persons living with arthritis, to take appropriate
actions to maximize their health and well being. This is achieved by
collecting, analyzing, and disseminating epidemiologic and cost
information, and provide technical assistance to local health
departments and community-based organizations in program development,
implementation, and evaluation.

Description: The focus of this project is to facilitate the
creation of enjoyable social and physical environments that enable
Californians to become and stay active, thereby, reaping the benefits of
a physically active lifestyle. Organized with three main objectives:
(1) to increase the proportion of the California population, age 50 and
older, who engage in regular physical activity, (2) increase the
proportion of employers who sponsor, and employees who engage in,
regular physical activity, and (3) increase the proportion of community
and neighborhood policies and environments that encourage and support
walking and biking.

Description: This project is a cooperative effort with the California Department of
Health Services (DHS) to coordinate with DHS and outside agencies to
develop policies and guidelines to improve public awareness of diabetes
and standards of care for people with diabetes. This project provides
policy and program support to integrate diabetes policy for the DHS
managed care systems, and to ensure monitoring of diabetes-related
outcomes.
Title: California Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program (CHDSP)

Description: The purpose of this project is to (1) increase
awareness among policy makers and media members of heart disease and
stroke in areas with high rates of cardiovascular disease, (2) expand
collaboration among community-based organizations, health departments
and coalitions, clinics, hospitals, businesses and voluntary agencies,
and (3) develop a CVD information clearinghouse with emphasis on
assisting public health workers and researchers to address CVD
disparities and needs of the multi-ethnic California population.

Description: The goals of this project are to
(1) conduct strategic planning activities
to assist the California Obesity Prevention Initiative (COPI) to develop
a plan for obesity prevention in California, (2) develop pilot
intervention projects, (3) provide training and technical assistance to
state and local staff and collaborative partners, and (4) evaluate
progress and impact of the California Obesity Prevention Plan and the
pilot interventions.

Description: The specific aim of this project is to enable the
Department of Health Services and local health departments to achieve
the goal of providing continuing education to health professionals in
the State, including the coordination and enhancement of programs
related to continuing and emerging public health issues.
Title: Evaluation
of Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers of California (ARCCs)
Project Period: 9/1/85-Ongoing

Description: This project provides an evaluation of the ARCCs
and includes development and refinement of a Minimum Uniform Data Set
(MUDS), which has been used to investigate health and social service
utilization patterns of people with Alzheimer's disease, predictors of
survival for people with Alzheimer's disease, and correlates of
depression among people with Alzheimer's disease.
Title: Frontotemporal Dementia: Genes, Images, and Emotions
Project Period: 9/1/02-8/31/07

Description: The goal of this project is to determine the genetic
causes, neuroimaging hallmarks, emotional sequelae and clinical features
of frontotemporal lobar degeneration, compared to Alzheimer's disease,
healthy aging, and progressive supranuclear palsy.
Title: Maternal Child and Adolescent Health: Public Health Research Model

overall goals of this study are to (1) improve maternal child health
program planning and evaluation through use of evidence-based research,
and (2) organize and direct epidemiological surveillance and evaluation

Title: Preventive
Health Care for the Aging Project (PHCA)
Project Period: 7/92-6/30/09

Description: The goals of the PHCA program are to assist California's older population in
preventing and/or controlling ill health and promoting improved health.
This project provides technical assistance and evaluation resources to
the California Department of Health Services (DHS) for the project which
is a program of public health nursing services that include
comprehensive health appraisals, individual health counseling, referral
and follow-up of suspected health problems to other health
professionals, group and community education, and community advocacy
activities. This project has evaluated the effectiveness of the program
in sustaining health behavior changes among the client population
measured in terms of compliance to health plan recommendations developed
mutually between public health nurses and the older adults served by the
program. The project has also investigated major risk factors for
cardiovascular disease among older Californians served by the program.

Description: The goal of this project is to ensure that children
are health and ready to learn by taking advantage of the pivotal
position of school in reaching children and families by combining health
education, health promotion and disease prevention, and access to
health-related services in an integrated and systematic manner.
Title: Stem Cell Research Unit
Project Period: 7/1/07-6/30/12

Description: The goal of this project is to distribute and revise
comprehensive statewide guidelines and reporting requirements to be used
by the Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (SCRO), reviewing research
projects involving the derivation or use of human stem cells,
Institutional Review Boards (IRB's) reviewing oocyte donation/use in
research projects, and human stem cell research projects in California.
Title: Technical Assistance - Refugee Health Section
Project Period: 7/1/05-6/30/08
Funding Agency: California Department of Health Services
Description: The goals of this project are to assist the Refugee
Health Section at the California Department of Health Services (1) in
maintaining, refining and adding report-generating capability to the
Refugee Health Electronic Information Systems (RHEIS) and provide data
reporting and other technical assistance to RHS management; (2) by
performing planning, development, implementation and oversight
activities related to the Refugee Health Assessment Program (RHAP), and
(3) in maintaining and upgrading the California Nutrition Network
Geographic Information Systems (CNN-GIS) and perform statistical and
spatial data analysis for the CPNS evaluation unit.
Title: Tobacco Control Evaluation Project

Description: In collaboration with the
Tobacco Control Section, California Department of Health Services,
this project aims to (1) develop advertising and public relations
campaigns, (2) measure and assess their outcomes, (3) develop an
