UCSF INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH & AGING ◊ UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO
Located at the Laurel Heights Campus of the University of California, San Francisco, the Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) was originally established by the School of Nursing in 1979 as the Aging Health Policy Center. The Center evolved from social sciences research and training activities, initially undertaken by faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 1976.

Since Drs. Wendy Max and Patrick Fox assumed the role as Institute Co-Directors in 1999, their mission has been to build a productive, academically vibrant, and financially sound center of research, education, and public service programs.
When the Regents of the University of California established the Institute for Health & Aging as an organized research unit (ORU) on July 19, 1985, it represented a significant commitment by the University to the field of aging, and is a special acknowledgement of the importance of aging research, education, and public service to the University's mission.
"The period 1999 through 2005 was a time of critical growth and decisive change for the Institute. Despite the financial challenges created by the state budget crisis, the Institute is financially sound, organizationally strong, and a dynamic center of research on issues of health, illness, aging, and health care policy." — Wendy Max, Ph.D.
Today, IHA continues to grow in total research dollars, while expanding its research agenda into new areas.
Over the years, the Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) has established a strong network of relationships extending across varying departments, schools and other University of California campuses including Berkeley, Davis and Los Angeles (UCLA).
It is this network of support, combined with a collaborative and multidisciplinary focus that enables the Institute to expand its research agenda into new areas, while addressing the challenges facing a growing aging population.

The Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) receives extramural funding from a variety of sources, totaling over $15.4 million, which support over eighty research grants, community service projects, and IHA programs.
In fiscal year 2006-07, over 75% of IHA's funding was received through the State of California, 19% of which were federal "flow-through" funds, while about 56% were non-federal.
Another 16% of IHA's contracts and grants are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Approximately 9% of the Institute's funding comes
from private foundations and individual donors.

| Ten-Year Trend |

| Federal, State, Private Funding |
Over the past seven years, since fiscal year 2000/01, federal funding, including both grant awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and federal flow-through state contracts with the California Department of Health Services, increased by over 23% from $4.38 to over $5.4 million. State, non-federal funding, meanwhile, grew approximately 28.5% from $6.7 to over $8.6 million. Much of the increase in state funding is a result of new, additional contracts, particularly in the area of child health. Finally, funding from private foundations and donors increased only 12% from $1.26 million in fiscal year 2000/01 to about $1.4 million in fiscal year 2006/07.
