Training and Education Programs

The Institute for Health & Aging at the School of Nursing, University of California, San Francisco, provides comprehensive education and training in aging, health policy, and health services research for pre- and post-doctoralscholars in a variety of social science disciplines.

Over the past 10 years, IHA faculty members have mentored 118 predoctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, and 67 visiting scholars.

In addition, IHA participates in two collaborative training programs. Both programs are designed to:

The first, the Health Services Research and Health Policy Fellowship Program, a collaboration between the Institute for Health & Aging and the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF, provides multidisciplinary teaching and training for postdoctoral fellows. The fellowships are funded jointly by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program curriculum comprises a supervised research project, a seminar series that focuses on health policy, health services, research methods, and writing, among other topics, and a career development component.

The second, a joint program of IHA, the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences, UCSF, and the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley, provides didactic training in healthcare organization and administration, health policy, health economics, and research methods and statistics for predoctoral students. Since their inception in 1985, these fellowship programs have trained more than 30 fellows from many disciplines of health research.

Also, the Tish Sommers Senior Scholars and Joe Estes Elder Law Scholar Programs bring distinguished leaders to the UCSF campus, and provide an opportunity for intergenerational exchange between university scholars and knowledgeable community and national leaders. The Tish Sommers Senior Scholar Program honors and seeks to continue the work of Tish Sommers (1914-1985), the co-founder and president of the Older Women's League (OWL) and an activist on behalf of health insurance and pension rights for women in midlife and old age. Sponsored by the Institute for Health & Aging, recipients of the Tish Sommers Senior Scholars Award are distinguished older postdoctoral and graduate students, who are actively committed to improving the lives of older women.

The Judge Joe E. Estes Memorial Fund for Aging and the Law provides a national award for scholars or community advocates who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of aging and the law. Judge Estes was nationally known for his advocacy work on behalf of legal justice and those who are affected by policy inequities.
